On January 1st, 1966 Tingle was sent to Vietnam to be part of the 2ndbattalion, 16thinfantry regiment nicknamed the “rangers”. This regiment was stationed in Camp Ranger where the regiment would conduct search and destroy missions. These missions were conducted in notable places such as the “Iron Triangle”, the Michelin Rubber Plantation, and the Trapezoid. In their time at Camp Ranger the rangers were able to inflict heavy losses on the enemy’s manpower and supplies.
In March, the regiment was moved from Camp Ranger to Camp Bearcat. Once settled in the new camp, the Regiment was given orders for their next operation, ABILENE. ABILENE was a division level operation to find and destroy enemy supplies and base camps.
Between the dates of April 4thand April 11ththe 2ndbattalion performed independent Airmobile insertions and sweeps at several locations in the eastern half of AO OREGON south of Xuyên Môc.
On Easter Sunday 1966, April 10th, Tingle was on recon patrol1when he was ambushed and fatally shot in the chest.
