Tom Kermit Tingle (often known as Kermit) was born to Tom Ben Tingle and Fannie Lee Tingle in the Fork Community of Philadelphia, MS; he grew up as the middle child with five other siblings: Tom K., Ann, and Keith. Tragically one sibling died as an infant.
Kermit grew up as an outdoorsman and frequently enjoying hunting and fishing. He helped his family by doing farm chores and tending to his family’s farm’s cotton, cattle and horses. He was described as an easily excited boy who, upon getting his first television “was thrilled that he could see something like that”.
Their family also had a long history of military service stretching all the way back to Kermit’s grandfather Benjamin F. Tingle who served during the Civil War as a private in the Confederate army. Kermit had two uncles Fletcher and Roger who served in World War I and II respectively.
