Tingle became the first out of four people from Neshoba county to be killed during the Vietnam War. His fate was reported to his wife a day after his death on April 11th. His remains were recovered and confirmed by his brother, Keith Tingle upon its return to the United States. Tingle was buried in Fort Donelson National Cemetery, Dover KY. He was also memorialized in Henry’s chapel, Philadelphia MS where he was given a grave along with the rest of his family. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart.
Margarete Tingle gave birth to her third child, Tom Ken Tingle, on April 12th, 1966 the day after she found out about her husband’s death. She never remarried and remained committed to maintaining her husband’s memory; over a month she singlehandedly renovated her town’s garden memorializing Kermit and fifteen other soldiers who died in Vietnam. She died in 2006 at the age of 76; her gravestone bears the words “His Wife”.
